Gounod began to compose an opera after Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, named Capuleti ei Montecchi, but did not finish it. Later, In 1865, the composer returned to the Shakespearean drama by entrusting the writing of the libretto to Jules Barbier and Michel Carrè, who were already authors of Faust. So two years later, on April 27, 1867, Romeo and Juliette made its debut in Paris, achieving immediate success.
The opera is divided into five acts, and presents differences compared to the original source, such as the addition of the character of Stéphano, page of Romeo's page, interpreted en travesti by a female voice, and the scene of Juliette's awakening at the end of the opera, allowing the heartbreaking final duet with the dying lover.

Wednesday 27 April 2022 at 8 pm , was the first performance of "Roméo et Juliette" by Charles Gounod, and the last will be on May the 10th.
The cast include some of the best known names of today's lyrical stage: the famous tenor Juan Diego Flórez in the role of Roméo, and the renowned Moldavian soprano, Valentina Naforniță in the role of Juliette. The role of Stéphano is supported by Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, Evgeny Stavinsky is Frère Laurent; Alessio Arduini is Mercutio, and Giorgio Misseri in the role of Tybalt. With them, Francesco Milanese as Capulet, Francesco Samuele Venuti as Pâris, Lulama Taifasi as Benvolio, Adriano Gramigni , as Le Duc, Eduardo Martìnez Flores as Grégorio and Xenia Tziouvzras complete the cast as Gertrude.
On the podium of the Mehta hall, conducting the Choir and the Maggio Orchestra, will be Maestro Henrik Nánási
Directed by Frederic Wake-Walker.
